For those who are planning to prepare a basket of food to donate to those in need, there are a few guidelines to follow when putting it together. 1. Please bring the basket to St. Vincent’s school gym on Monday, November 25th between 6:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. 2. Choose a turkey or roasting chicken appropriate for the family you wish to feed.
1-2 people: a chicken, turkey breast or small turkey
3-4 people: a 12 to 15 lb. turkey
5-6 people: a 16 to 18 lb. turkey
7 or more people: a 19+ lb. turkey
3. Make sure the bird is frozen and wrapped securely in newspaper and a brown bag. This will keep thebird cold and prevent thawing. Since paper bags are in short supply these days, please double wrap the bird in newspaper. Important: Please write the turkey size on the outside of the newspaper or brown bag. 4. Include the “fixings” for a Thanksgiving dinner—potatoes, rolls, stuffing, cranberry sauce, yams, vegetables, gravy, nuts, pies (not frozen) and some festive candies. 5. No frozen food except the turkey should be included in the box. No milk, butter or other dairy products that would spoil without refrigeration for several hours.
6. No alcoholic beverages please. 7. Place heavier foods on the bottom and crushable items (desserts, fruit, rolls, etc.) on the top. 8. Fresh fruits and vegetables are always welcome and appreciated. 9. Mark the outside of the box/basket indicating the number of people it is designed to feed. A list of the contents of the box taped to the outside would also be appreciated.
